You're The Digital Head of Household - Guide to Getting Organized

Another way to think about it is, what would SOMEONE else need if I disappeared tomorrow? Here’s that guide.

You’re all grown up and have nice things

And because you’re all grown up, you also know that you need to protect those things and prepare the people around you to be able to access and have the information that they need when they need it. This requires some planning, organization and periodic review and clean up.

The reality is, most people don’t do a great job of this ‘organizing’ and ‘tending’ task. It often doesn’t even cross their minds until they’re ‘older.’ However, it’s usually needed sooner, and is easier to maintain if it’s created now.

Every household has different needs and structures. In some cases, one person does it all and in others it’s divided. Whatever your structure, this blog is meant to be a list of the things to do,  or to confirm what you’re already doing.

Technical Head of Household

This is about technology and information that is stored technically. This is about your home network, and all the devices and networks you have setup and that are connected to one another in a fragile (but it works) web. Of course you want other people to be able to access it and help you with it.

The starting point is your password vault and inventory. You know. But where to start and how to organize? Got it. That’s in the mindmap… Click in, and around. Write your own list. And make it part of your birthday ritual to yourself.

Finance Head of Household

Some households have a “digital head of household” that does both the technical and the financial. Sometimes households have just one adult (a superstar adult).  Sometimes there’s a partnership on all matters of household digital and financial – who benefit from having a shared language and some routine routines.

The below mindmap outlines the “getting organized” considerations for a finance head of household. You’re probably already doing ALL of these things. In which case, use this mindmap as your confirmation. Click in and click around.

(NOTE: These two mindmaps look similar – because they each needed to stand alone. There are subtle differences throughout but the significant differences are in the “These Things” box – that’s dark purple in the middle.)

It Takes Time

You’ve zoomed down to the end of this post wanting the short cut and easy next step. I wish I had one to offer. You *know* you want it done, and maybe you can wait until later – but chances are – you’ll regret it when later arrives. You’ve already got some of this stuff squared away – so, just keep going. You got this!
